Did you know that a fuel card can help you to improve the overall fuel efficiency of your fleet? Finding the right fuel card for your business or making the important decision of switching to a fuel card can seem like a difficult decision, but it does not necessarily have to be.

It is quite possible that the idea of switching to fuel cards may not even have been considered by you, but a fuel card can make a huge difference when it comes to minimising your maintenance and fuel costs.
In the past, fleet-based businesses had to keep a track of every penny spent in their budgets. The vehicle driver would receive a large amount of money for purchasing fuel for the vehicle whenever they asked. There was no system to verify the actual quantity of fuel purchased by the driver except the receipts provided by the petrol station. Although, this is not the most efficient manner of conducting business, it was the most common, leading to higher business costs.
Fuel cards are useful for both the employer and employee. It records all transactions and the business is no longer dependent on the availability of receipts. In addition, you can purchase cheap petrol and cheap diesel with fuel cards, as the fuel prices offered by fuel cards are slightly lower than the market retail price.

On 1st April, the British government raised the price of fuel by 2p per litre. The haulage industry, which is already suffering huge losses due to the recession, has been badly hit by this decision. The Scottish hauliers have protested this duty rise stating that they are already facing hard times, due to the current recession.
The fuel duty rise will add £1,000 to the running cost for every lorry, according to the representatives of the transport companies. The spokesperson also added that the fuel duty rise is ironic considering the Scottish Government’s announcement of offering funding to rural petrol stations in Aberdeenshire in order to stay commercially viable.
The haulage industry is warning of possible job cuts to meet the expenses that will result from the rise in fuel prices. In such hard and tiring situations, every haulage firm and transport company must save and cut down on as much expenditure as possible. Fuel cards will allow companies to reduce their fuel expenditure, as the price of fuel bought through fuel cards costs much less than the market retail price.
Fuel cards also offer cashless transactions and allow companies to save a small but in total a significant amount of money with each fuel transaction.

With the recent fuel duty hike, the government will be able to collect £1.4million extra tax everyday from motorists. This will eventually add the cost of £1 when you fill up your tank with petrol.
This will put an additional tax of 2.12p on each litre of diesel and unleaded that will be sold. Duty will rise by 1.84p plus VAT, which will boost the additional tax of 2.12p a litre. The Treasury will be able to collect £1.369million daily, alone from unleaded petrol sales.
The furious motorists state that the drivers are hit again following December’s 2p-a-litre increase duty. Mark Wallace, director of TaxPayers’ Alliance campaign believes that this is an additional kick in the teeth for motorists and also an enormous blow to the economy. The commuting cost is already excessive and adding a tax burden during the present economic downturn is extremely unwise.
Also, experts believe that the increase in tax will push up the fuel price immediately as the petrol vendors cannot manage to absorb it. At such times, having a fuel card can be an advantage, as it eventually helps the users to make considerable savings. In addition, with fuel cards, the user will not have to carry cash and with the help of fuel cards, you can get diesel and petrol at cheaper prices.

The decreasing gap between the value of petrol run and diesel run fleet cars has raised concerns regarding the new models of fleet cars or vans that have default diesel engines in them.
Lloyds TSB Autolease and Lex claim to have a combined fleet of almost 371,000 vehicles, 80% of which now run on diesel. There are other companies too who portray similar figures.
Diesel cars though usually better than petrol cars have extra monthly charges that have to be paid by the lease company in order to cover the cost of its initial premium. Besides this, diesel also costs more which creates a problem during payback time.
The premium on diesel was larger than petrol, which has now decreased since the beginning of 2009. This decrease in the diesel premium has considerably reduced the gap between the amounts that were received at auctions by both diesel and petrol fleet cars. This has led to doubts of whether using diesel cars is now a wise option.
Diesel cars were always popular among fleet owners and this popularity grew due to the many advantages that diesel had to offer. One way for fleet owners to try and recoup some of there losses is to get cheap petrol and cheap diesel by using petrol cards or diesel cards when refuelling.
